About 100 Territorians braved the rain and wind on Saturday 12 December to take part in the Walk Against Warming.
It was a great turnout for a very wet and blustery day, and in spite of the unfortunate need to cancel the event earlier in the day due to a severe weather warning from the Bureau of Meteorology.

As Environment Centre NT Coordinator Stuart Blanch stated in the NT News the following day, “It just shows you can’t stop Territorians voicing their concerns on climate change”.
|
Participants walked along the Nightcliff foreshore to show their support for a legally binding climate treaty to be struck by world leaders in Copenhagen. The treaty needs to commit developed countries like Australia to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25% below 1990 levels during the next decade, and to fund a multi-hundred billion dollar assistance package to help poor countries move to a low-carbon future and to adapt to the climate change we (rich countries) have already created. |
It was great to see many familiar faces, but also many Territorians from all walks of life who wanted to have their say.
|
Also, around the nation’s capital cities and regional centres, an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 Australians Walked Against Warming, sending a clear message to Prime Minster Rudd and other world leaders gathered in Copenhagen that we want them to take strong action to create a safe climate future. See www.walkagainstwarming.org for more photos and stories from the many Walks Against Warming held across the country on the day. |
