Howard, nuclear energy and global warming.

The Environment Centre NT has condemned the recently established Federal nuclear taskforce - headed by former Telstra boss Dr Ziggy Switkowski.

Despite Howard's talk of the need for a ‘full blooded debate’ in light of global warming and rising greenhouse gas emissions, the Howard Government and its taskforce have no interest in addressing technologies and policies that would actually solve the problem - and do so without adding to the global radioactive waste and nuclear weapons crises!

Mr Howard has called for a full blooded debate. How can you call it a full-blooded debate when the taskforce panel is stacked, the submissions will be kept secret and there will be no public hearings?

If John Howard was interested in addressing climate change, this taskforce would look at how to expedite uptake of wind, solar, sustainable biomass energy, and energy efficiency.

The Howard Government is simply attempting to use the controversial nature of nuclear power and “clean coal” to divert public attention from its abysmal record of failure on climate change.

While our leaders sit and debate an outdated, slow, costly and dangerous technology that the government never actually intends to use, our greenhouse emissions are soaring ever upward.
