AWB scandal shows Canberra's uranium 'safeguards' cannot be trusted.
The Environment Centre of the Northern Territory (ECNT) says the unfolding scandal over wheat sales to Iraq proves that the Australian government cannot be trusted with proposed uranium sales to China.

ECNT Coordinator Peter Robertson said the AWB scandal shows that key Federal ministers and Departments, by their own admission, are not competent to oversee such a dangerous trade.

“Clearly when commercial factors and corporate profits are involved, the Howard government is quite prepared to turn a blind eye to its legal and ethical responsibilities.
“Even if China was prepared to have open and transparent checking of all its nuclear facilities, which everyone knows is not the case, the Howard government would not vigorously investigate potential misuse of Australian uranium for military purposes, or mishandling of radioactive waste.

“The combination of an inherently secretive authoritarian Chinese regime – with a proven track record of nuclear proliferation, and an Australian government with a track record of putting corporate profits ahead of any other considerations, spells disaster in the case of uranium.

“How much more serious does the global crisis involving nuclear energy, nuclear weapons and radioactive waste have to become before governments stand up and say, ‘enough – this technology is too dangerous, too dirty and too costly to pursue any further’.

“Then at last we will start investing the money and effort that are required to replace both nuclear and fossil fuel energy with safe, renewable and affordable technologies and energy efficiency programs.”

Further comment: Peter Robertson – 0409 089 020

“The fission reactor produces both energy and radioactive waste; we want to use the energy now and leave the radioactive waste for our children and grandchildren to take care of. This is against the ecological imperative: Thou shalt not leave a polluted and poisoned world to future generations.” Hannes Alfven, 1970 Nobel Laureate in Physics
