Environment Centre urges caution on crocodile hunting push. Killing for ‘sport’ may increase attacks on people. The Environment Centre of the Northern Territory says great caution is required before any go ahead is given for commercial crocodile hunting – otherwise know as ‘safari’ or ‘trophy’ hunting. |

NT Budget fails environmental test. The Environment Centre NT says the latest NT budget announced today fails the environment test. Overall environment spending has increased by just 1.5% to $95.5 million. This new total represents a mere 3.8% of the total budget – slightly down on the previous year. “Our whole economy and ‘lifestyle’ are based on our natural environment and the services it provides." |

Call for big increase in environment funding . ECNT is calling for a substantial increase in funding for the environment in this year’s NT budget, due to be handed down in May.
“Surely our environment with all the benefits it provides is our most basic and important ‘infrastructure’ and should be funded accordingly." |

US bombing of NT - US Airforce to drop live bombs on Delamare Range Facility. The Environment Centre of the Northern Territory (ECNT) is today emailing a letter of protest to President Bush, via the US embassy in Canberra, over the announcement on Friday afternoon that US bombers will be flying over Australia and dropping live bombs on an area of savanna woodland near the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory. |

National Weedbuster Week: 8-15 October 2005 - Gamba grass in NT to be nominated as a National Key Threatening Process To mark National Weedbuster Week in the NT, the Environment Centre NT (ECNT) will this week formally nominate the weed Gamba as a Key Threatening Process (KTP) under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act). |

"Successful community forum on gamba grass threat - Government divided over control measures". A very successful community forum on gamba grass control was held yesterday at Batchelor. Serious concerns were raised about the failure of NT governments to properly address the major environmental, social and economic crisis that is inevitable if gamba is not tackled. |

Toxic
mangoes? Call for ban on ‘"dirty dozen" chemicals. The
Environment Centre NT says there are a dozen highly dangerous
chemicals being used in mango farming in the NT which should
be withdrawn from use: some banned outright; others phased
out as quickly as possible.

A Big Win
For Democracy In The Northern Territory - Environment Centre
congratulates Northern Territory Government for delivering
on Freedom of Information legislation. The Environment Centre
NT has today congratulated the Northern Territory Government
on the successful passage of the Information Bill. The Bill
which was passed late on Tuesday night will guarantee Territorians
access to information held by government and is an important
democratic right which has been denied to Territorians for
many years.

NT Government
Action Needed on GM. The Environment Centre of the Northern
Territory welcomed yesterday's decision by the Federal Office
of the Gene Technology Regulator rejecting the application
to commercially grow genetically
modified cotton in northern Australia. Opposition to the application
came from many quarters including local government, farmers,
environment groups and individuals.

Smith is now available. This book is a full-colour revised

Natural Ecosystems: A field guide to environmental weeds of
the NT'.

future The Environment Centre NT is using World Population
Day (July 11th) to highlight the close links between issues
of environment and population particularly here in the Northern

New environmental
alliance formed for Northern Australia- Environment
groups from around the country have formed an historic new
alliance in Darwin, to build a vision of a sustainable future
for northern Australia. At a just finished week-long meeting
in Darwin, the new alliance of regional, state and national
groups, the Northern Australia Environment Alliance, discussed
environmental issues across Cape York Peninsula, Gulf Country,
Top End and the Kimberley. This broad region is facing increasing
development pressures and urgent conservation challenges.

World Wetlands Day (WWD) Events in Darwin
The Environment
Centre NT and the National Centre for Tropical Wetlands Research
held a half day seminar entitled "People in Tropical
Wetlands" at the Northern Territory University on Friday
the 8th. The seminar covered topics like Working with Tropical
Wetlands, Ecotourism in Tropical Wetlands and Cultural Heritage
Management of Tropical Wetlands. On Saturday the 9th there was
also a field trip to three local wetland sites: Early
Morning at Fogg Dam, the Adelaide River Floodplain at 'Windows
on the Wetlands' and Knuckey's Lagoon.

Conservation
groups attack cotton plans for Northern Australia - Conservation
groups today attacked new plans by the Cotton industry to
move into northern Australia.
A report just released by the Cotton Industry Cooperative
Research Centre identified 21 areas for expansion of cotton
crops across northern Australia - in Cape York, the Gulf
Country, the Top End and the Kimberley.

agreements Environment
groups (Australian Conservation Foundation, The Wilderness

expressed their disappointment at the Australian Democrats
policy free approach to their preference negotiations with
the Coalition and Labor announced yesterday.

on the four major political parties performance, policies
and commitments to date.

Parties scored on environment for NT election. The
Environment Centre of the Northern Territory today released
a scorecard comparing the approach to environmental issues
of different parties in the Northern Territory election.
According to the scorecard minor parties have the best environment
platforms with the Labor Party a long way off the pace. The
CLP and One Nation fared worst.

Legal
defense appeal.The
Conservation Council of SA and three of its committee members
(current President Margaret Bolster, Richard Owen and past
President - Prof David Shearman) are being sued by private
developers Tom, Wendy and Andrew Chapman, in a major defamation
action relation to the Hindmarsh Island Bridge matter. The
legal action is an outcome of CCSA's long term efforts to
protect the River Murray estuary and Coorong Ramsar listed
wetland.

ECNT
and Greenpeace Australia have condemned the Australian Government
for lobbying internationally for
the continued use of the cancer-causing chemical Mirex. Mirex
is banned in all bar 2 OECD countries, though is still being
used in the Northern Territory.
