The Environment Centre of the NT (ECNT) was delighted to have been invited to address a forum organized by the recently formed Katherine Nuclear Dump Action Group last Wednesday evening in Katherine.
A passionate crowd of around 50 locals attended and there is no doubt that the Federal government has a fight on its hands if it thinks Katherine is going to be a pushover for its radioactive waste dump site.
ECNT Coordinator Peter Robertson said, “Katherine might have got off the mark slowly in terms of opposition to the foolish waste dump plan, but it is pretty fired up now!
“With opposition coming from health professionals, horticulturalists, pastoralists, tourism operators, the Mayor and some local Councilors, and parents, this is a broad based and powerful community force.
“Hopefully the newly established Senate Inquiry into the waste dump will visit Katherine and meet with the local community.
“If they do so they will leave with no doubt in their minds as to how little credibility the Federal government has in choosing the Fishers Ridge site and attempting to override community concerns through its draconian legislation.”
