Beverage Industry Wins on CDL, Community and Environment Lose

The Environment Centre has responded angrily to the decision by Minister Chris Burns to reject Container Deposit Legislation for the NT.

Coordinator Kirsten Blair said:

"In recent months we have seen intense lobbying from the beverage industry to have the Container Deposit Legislation proposal knocked on the head and now it appears that lobbying has paid off."

"Despite strong demonstrations of community support for the introduction of CDL, the Government has chosen a waste management option that has not been subject to community consultation, one that will be funded by the very industry that is most vocally opposed to introducing CDL"

"Before the 2001 election the Labor party said: Labor supports the move towards container deposit legislation, but needs a process of community consultation before introducing legislation Over 90% of respondents to that community consultation were in support of introducing CDL. This is clearly stated in the report presented to Minister Kon Vatskalis in 2002 yet the Government has chosen to follow a completely different path. This outcome is extremely disappointing." Ms Blair concluded.
