8-9 February 2002

World Wetlands Day (WWD)

Events in Darwin

The Environment Centre NT and the National Centre for Tropical Wetlands Research held a half day seminar entitled "People in Tropical Wetlands" at the Northern Territory University on Friday the 8th. The seminar covered topics like Working with Tropical Wetlands, Ecotourism in Tropical Wetlands and Cultural Heritage Management of Tropical Wetlands. On Saturday the 9th there was also a field trip to three local wetland sites: Early Morning at Fogg Dam, the Adelaide River Floodplain at 'Windows on the Wetlands' and Knuckey's Lagoon.

These two events provided an opportunity to update different organisations and agencies on wetlands research programs and activities in the Top End and elsewhere in Australia; and provided an interface between scientists, local communities and others involved in the use, conservation, protection and management of wetlands.

Make Comment:

Under changes to Environmental Legislation it is now mandatory for all export fisheries to be subject to a form of Environmental Assessment by Environment Australia- the Federal Environment Department. Each assessment allows a period for public comment. In the Northern Territory the Mud Crab fishery will be the first to undergo assessment. While it is uncertain when the draft assessment will be released for public comment it will be in the near future. If you are interested in commenting on the management of the fishery you may wish to download two relevant PDF documents.

The reports are:
