risk.

ECNT
Welcomes Long Awaited Darwin Harbour Plan of Management – The
Environment Centre of the Northern territory welcomes the release
of the Darwin Harbour Plan of Management and waits in anticipation
to see if it delivers results. The release of the plan, together
with the recent declaration of the harbour's mangroves as conservation
zone, is sending a signal that the Government is taking positive
steps towards protecting the harbour.

NT
Government has hands off wheel on Darwin Harbour. The Environment Centre
of the Northern
Territory today accused the NT Government of relinquishing control
over activities in Darwin Harbour. The illegal clearing that
occurred at the Phillips LNG site at Wickham Point in recent
weeks as well as the ongoing clearing and damage to mangroves
at Palmerston dump and elsewhere in the Harbour raise questions
about the Government's ability to manage Darwin Harbour effectively.

Martin Fiddles
While Wickham Point Mangroves Fall The Environment Centre Northern
Territory is concerned that the Martin Government's increasingly
desperate attempts to bring Sunrise and other gas fields on
shore to Darwin are becoming embarrassing and are serving as
a distraction from the fact that Wickham Point mangroves are
being cleared for a road that may not yet be needed.

NT Government
Ignores Community Concern and Condemns Darwin Harbour to Industrial
Future – The Environment Centre NT is extremely disappointed by the
Planning Minister's announcement today that he will grant an
Exceptional Development Permit to Phillips Petroleum for their
proposed gas plant at Wickham Point in Darwin Harbour. This is
the second approval the Martin government has granted Phillips
and constitutes the final green light for the siting of the project.

Development
proposals abound, but still no Harbour Management Plan. The Darwin Harbour
Alliance has today called on the Northern Territory Government
to develop and commit to a plan of management for Darwin Harbour.
Major industrial developments, including fertilizer and methanol
plants, are currently being planned for within Darwin Harbour.
This is clearly contrary to community wishes which saw the Government
abandon plans to dam the Elizabeth River earlier this year due
to potential environmental impacts.

Blackmore Prawn
Farm would destroy huge area if approved. The Environment Centre Northern
Territory is alarmed at a proposal to clear over 500 hectares
of native vegetation to develop a massive aquaculture project
on the Blackmore River. The Northern Territory Government has
offered developers Phelps-Panizza a 790 hectare lease on Middle
Arm, an area equivalent to over 400 football fields, just slightly
smaller than the existing Palmerston township.

The Environment
Centre has welcomed news that the Government has abandoned
its ludicrous
Elizabeth River dam project due to a lack of community support. Since the Government's October 2000 announcement that its preferred
option for the development of the new suburb of Weddell involved
damming the Elizabeth River (and killing all upstream mangroves),
the Environment Centre has worked with other Darwin Harbour Alliance
members to build community opposition to the dam. The Government's
backflip is testament to the strength of both the Alliance and
the community's opposition to destructive development in Darwin
Harbour. The challenge now for 2001 is to achieve protection
for Darwin Harbour in the form of a National Park or marine protected
area.

and Bynoe Harbours.
