Heritage Nomination
Highlights Harbour Values |
The Environment Centre
of the Northern Territory and Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation
have today launched a joint nomination calling for Darwin Harbour
to be listed on the NT Heritage register. This launch forms part
of the 2002 Territory Heritage Festival.
|
Environment Centre coordinator
Kirsten Blair said "This nomination details the natural values
of Darwin Harbour. It clearly outlines the reasons that Darwin Harbour
must be preserved and not treated as a site for industrial development"
|
"Darwin Harbour has
long been recognised by the community for the important natural,
cultural, recreational, tourism and aesthetic values it supports
The last few years have seen a ground swell of community support
for Darwin Harbour protection in the face of ridiculous and destructive
development proposals. It is high time for the Government to respond
to community expectation and any long term vision for the Territory's
furture must include a National Park for Darwin Harbour"
|
"Heritage listing will
be a useful reflection of the value the community places on our
precious Harbour. We commend this nomination to the Heritage Advisory
Council and look forward to a positive response" Ms Blair
concluded.
