The Larrakia Nation Aborignial
Corporation and the Environment Centre of the Northern Territory
today called for the Environment Minister Kon Vatskalis to act on
his election promises of a Management Plan for Darwin Harbour and
conservation zoning for all mangroves. Piecemeal development proposals
continue to be pushed through and the result is destruction of important
mangrove and rainforest ecosystems. A road corridor recently cleared
through mangroves at Middle Arm is one example of development out
of control. Despite inquiries, there has been no clear explanation
given to the two organisations as to why this road has been cleared.

Larrakia Nation spokesperson
Donna Jackson said today "The message from the community is clear:
it is time for a National Park declaration in Darwin Harbour. Continuous
development proposals are contrary to public expectations of protection
for the mangroves"
|
Environment Centre coordinator
Kirsten Blair added "There is no public notice given for many
of these developments let alone public consultation. If the new minister
isn't up to speed with his responsibilities he must put a hold on
all proposals until he is. The rampant, random destruction of mangroves
is unjustified and contrary to public expectation. The time for protection
is now, before it's too late".
