Development Proposals
Abound, But Still No Harbour Management Plan |
The Darwin Harbour Alliance
has today called on the Northern Territory Government to develop
and commit to a plan of management for Darwin Harbour. Major industrial
developments, including fertilizer and methanol plants, are currently
being planned for within Darwin Harbour. This is clearly contrary
to community wishes which saw the Government abandon plans to dam
the Elizabeth River earlier this year due to potential environmental
impacts.

"Last year over 8,500
people signed a petition calling for conservation of Darwin Harbour.
It is clear that the community wants this area protected, not developed
beyond all recognition. We don't want our beautiful Harbour spoilt
like the one at Woolongong." Planning Action Network spokesperson
Margaret Clinch said today.

"Larrakia people are
seeking recognition of our rights to manage and conserve all the
natural resources that occur within our traditional lands, this
includes the harbour. We are 'Saltwater People', the Harbour has
much significance for us. Their are numerous Larrakia dreaming
sites, such as 'Dugong Dreaming', scattered throughout the catchment,
these significant areas must also be permanently protected. As
a community, Territorians are in a unique position to take a stand
now, and thereby ensure the cultural and environmental values of
our Harbour are preserved for everyone to enjoy," said Larrakia
Nation Office spokesperson Donna Jackson.

"The decision to introduce
major petro-chemical based industries to Darwin Harbour is one
which has been made without public consultation. The Harbour is
precious to many people and all stakeholders must have a say about
its future. Industries like this will change the face of the Harbour
forever, we must stop them before it's too late and ensure that
long term protection for Darwin Harbour is ensured via a comprehensive
plan of management" Environment Centre NT Coordinator Kirsten
Blair concluded.
