Bayview To Trample
More Mangroves |
Representatives of the
Environment Centre NT attended today's meeting of the Development
Consent Authority and were outraged to learn that once again, environmental
considerations are being circumvented by the developers of the Bayview
Haven canal estate.
|
Environment Centre Coordinator
Kirsten Blair said:
|
"We heard today that
Dover Investments has a "masterplan" for the Bayview development
stretching beyond the area covered under the original EIS but that
this plan has not been provided to the Development Consent Authority.
An application today by the developers was to subdivide an area
of crown land outside of the original Bayview lease area into 30
house blocks, which would see the Bayview Haven estate encroach
even further onto Sadgroves Creek.
|
"It is essential that
the Development Consent Authority reject today's applications to
extend Bayview until a complete proposal for all possible expansions
is submitted by the developer and all cumulative environmental
impact considerations can be taken into account. This is yet another
example of the 'Death by a thousand cuts' that the mangroves of
Darwin Harbour are being subjected to."
|
"Today's hearing was
especially disappointing as Dover Investments is represented on
the Darwin Harbour Advisory Committee. The Environment Centre is
participating in the development of the Darwin Harbour Plan of
Management process in good faith, yet when fellow committee members
are working to destroy sections of mangroves that the Government
has committed to protecting, it is difficult to believe this Plan
will be of much value." Ms Blair concluded.
