Landclearing a Threat
to the Top End: New National Report |
Land Clearing is a major
threat to the Top End's environments according to a new report published
by the Commonwealth Government: Australian Terrestrial Biodiversity
Assessment 2003.
|
The new report has found
that:
|
»
|
Clearing threatens ecosystems near Darwin and
is related to developments for horticulture and improved pastures;
and
|
»
|
In Northern Australia.significant gains can be
made for limited effort relative to the cost of repair in Southern
Australia.
|
|
"The Northern Territory
Government cannot hide from the facts, landclearing is a major threat
to the Top End environment," said Mr Henry Boer Northern Woodlands
Campaigner.
|
This new National report
shows large scale landclearing in the Northern Territory will cause
the same problems affecting Southern Australia, such as salinity
and soil erosion. It now will cost over 4.5 billion dollars to fix
up regions of Southern Australia most afflicted by land degradation.
|
"It is up to the Northern
Territory Government to stop the large scale landclearing now occurring
in the Daly Basin and The Litchfield Shire."
|
"The Northern Territory
Government needs to take its head out of the sand and stop large
scale clearing before the problem gets worse and the repair bill
becomes too big."
|
"In the other States
of Australia landclearing has caused untold damage on the environment.
The Northern Territory Government should learn from these huge
mistakes and protect the unique wildlife and the fragile tropical
landscape of the Northern Territory."
