ENVIRONMENT CENTRE CALLS
FOR COMMUNITY ACTION ON CLEARING
|
Calls for community action
on land clearing were made today by the Environment Centre of the
Northern Territory. An information flyer covering the current controls
on land clearing, the impact of clearing and promoting community
participation in Government processes was released today by the Environment
Centre.
|
"We are encouraging
informed community participation in the land clearing debate, to
ensure the development and implementation of an effective and appropriate
regulatory system for landclearing" Jann Crase, Environment
Centre of the Northern Territory Landclearing Campaigner said today.
|
"The release of voluntary
guidelines to minimise environmental damage from clearing is a
step in the right direction but it is certainly not enough. The
NT Government's land clearing policy which is to be released soon,
must establish a whole of Territory regulatory system that identifies
where clearing can occur and how much can take place."
|
"We need to regulate
land clearing to ensure truly sustainable development that delivers
economic, social and environmental benefits to the entire Territory
community. This means we need to maintain our biodiversity and
ecological processes across landscapes - broad scale land clearing
affects our ability to maintain these values," Ms Crase concluded.
