RENEWABLE ENERGY ABSENT FROM TERRITORY GOVERNMENT'S BUSINESS AGENDA .
“Renewable energy and green jobs appear to be absent from the Territory Government’s business and investment agenda based on a survey of the Chief Minister’s flagship fortnightly ‘Business Territory’ e-newsletter”, said Stuart Blanch, Coordinator, Environment Centre NT.
“Renewable energy projects have had no significant coverage in ‘Business Territory’ since the Chief Minister signed up to the Council of Australian Government’s Renewable Energy Target of 20% by 2020 on 30 April 2009,’ said Dr Blanch.
“There’s just silence from Government. Four months and a budget later and there’s still no evidence major funding is to be spent on attracting major renewable energy projects to the Territory."
Major gas, uranium, minerals, infrastructure, and port developments have all received plenty of coverage in ‘Business Territory’ during this period.
The NT Climate Change policy was to be released six months ago in February, and the Renewable Energy Working Group promised by the Chief Minster has not been formally established.
“It’s a big disappointment to many Territorians that renewable energy generation appears not to be top of mind for the Territory Government at a time when the world’s climate scientists are urging strong action and Australians are demanding deep emissions cuts within the decade.
“Territorians are seeking strong leadership from Chief Minister and Climate Change Minister Paul Henderson to commit to deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels by 2020, and to proactively seek to make the Territory a major renewable energy producer.
“Territorians welcomed the Chief Minister’s commitment at the April COAG meeting to meet the 20% renewable energy target in the Territory. Now they want strong action to see that happen."
