Kyoto action will
be good for jobs |
Discussions in yesterday's
session of NT Parliament about the Labor party's plan to ratify the
Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change show that both parties need to learn
more about the Territory implications of ratification of the international
agreement.
|
"The opposition have
simply got it wrong with their suggestion that ratifying Kyoto
will result
in a loss of jobs for the NT. It is very clear that major opportunities
exist for many new jobs to be created in renewable energy generation
and the other industries that will thrive as Australia moves to reduce
it's greenhouse gas emissions. The Territory has the opportunity
to lead the way in developing and hosting some of these new industries." Environment
Centre NT coordinator Kirsten Blair said today
|
"The Federal Labor
party is to be congratulated on their commitment to ratify the
Kyoto Climate
Change treaty but must acknowledge that the protocols are just the
first step on the path to combat global warming. To see a real impact
on a global scale, we need a commitment to actually reduce Australia's
greenhouse gas emissions, not increase them as the Kyoto protocols
currently allow." Ms Blair concluded.
