Protest at Perth corporate AGM over destruction of native forests on Tiwi Islands (NT). Commonwealth investigating possible serious breaches of environmental conditions. Protesters, including an Indigenous leader from Tiwi islands, gathered today at the AGM of Perth-based Great Southern Plantations (GSP) Ltd to challenge the company over its destructive forestry operation on the Tiwi Islands north of Darwin. |

Call for Inquiry into Tiwi forestry project.
Senate hears of plans for first large scale clearing of Bathurst Island forests. The Environment Centre of the Northern Territory (ECNT) has called for an Inquiry into the current operation and planned expansion of the Tiwi Island forestry project – a ‘partnership’ between Great Southern Plantations (GSP) Pty Ltd and the Tiwi Land Council (TLC). The current project involves clearing 26,000 hectares of native forest on Melville Island for woodchip plantations.

Protestors in Sydney and Darwin today joined forces to protest against the proposed mining of the McArthur River by Xstrata. Spokesperson for the Environment Centre Northern Territory (ECNT) Charles Roche said “we are at Parliament House today to ask the NT Government to protect the river and to ensure work on the river diversion is halted while the approval to mine is being challenged in court. |

ECNT has a copy of the letter dated 8 September from the Prime Minister to Clare Martin urging approval for the mine. |

The Environment Centre of the NT (ECNT) says the proposed Environment Protection Authority (EPA) as announced by the government on 22 June falls well short of what the government promised and is unacceptably weak.
“The government’s proposed EPA is merely an advisory body that can and most likely will be ignored."

NT Budget fails environmental test. The Environment Centre NT says the latest NT budget announced today fails the environment test. Overall environment spending has increased by just 1.5% to $95.5 million. This new total represents a mere 3.8% of the total budget – slightly down on the previous year. “Our whole economy and ‘lifestyle’ are based on our natural environment and the services it provides." |

PM must come clean on nuclear waste dump plans. The Environment Centre NT (ECNT) has called on the federal government to come clean on the full range and volume of radioactive and toxic materials likely to be dumped at the proposed NT nuclear waste dump.
ECNT has identified that at least twelve categories of radioactive material are almost certain to end up at any NT dump. |
