Darwin and Alice join international day of action on global warming.
Top End and Alice Springs environment groups will be participating in Saturday’s world-wide day of action on global warming. The day coincides with the UN conference on global warming currently taking place in Canada.
In Darwin the Environment Centre of the NT (ECNT) and COOLmob will be holding a ‘Stamp out global warming’ stall at Parap Market. A large poster will be available for people to sign and stamp ‘urgent’. The poster will be presented to Chief Minister Clare Martin.
ECNT Coordinaor Peter Robertson said global warming was the most serious environmental problem facing the world, including the NT.
“CSIRO and other reports show that the NT is going to be severely impacted by global warming through a combination of rising temperatures, increased storm severity, rising sea levels, declining moisture availability and increased risk of pests and diseases. These impacts will damage our environment, our health and our economy (e.g. agriculture; fishing; tourism)."
“Neither the NT nor the Commonwealth government are doing anywhere near as much as they could and should be doing to halt and reverse global warming."
“In the NT, greenhouse gas emissions are rising sharply, as they are elsewhere around Australia, especially in energy generation and transport. Fire and land clearing are also significant greenhouse gas contributors in the NT."
"Several years ago the Martin government promised a greenhouse strategy for the NT. We are still waiting and the urgency is becoming greater."
"At a Commonwealth level the Howard government is trying to delay serious action on global warming by promoting nuclear power and so-called ‘clean coal’ technology which is unproven, risky, and not likely to produce significant long term reductions in atmospheric CO2 or methane levels."
"Australia must join progressive and responsible nations and commit to a 60% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050 and a major program of energy efficiency and renewable energy.”
