NT Environment Centre counters nuclear misinformation campaign

New information brochure explains why nuclear is NOT the solution to global warming (or anything else)

The Environment Centre NT (ECNT) has commenced a community awareness campaign to counter the misinformation being put out by the nuclear industry and the Federal government in support of increased uranium mining and nuclear power.

ECNT Coordinator Peter Robertson said, “The notion that nuclear power is a ‘clean green’ solution to global warming (caused by excessive use of fossil fuels) is cynical and dishonest.

The nuclear industry has been dying a slow death for many years but its PR spin doctors have jumped on growing worldwide concern over global warming to try to sell nuclear as a quick fix.

What is most disturbing is the way various politicians, who up until a couple of months ago denied there was even such a thing as global warming, are now queuing up to say its real, but only insofar as nuclear is adopted as the solution.

Nuclear is slow, vastly expensive, dirty and dangerous. It not only produces large quantities of highly dangerous radioactive waste, it also produces high levels of greenhouse gases during mining, milling, enrichment and plant construction.

As our brochure shows, going the nuclear route is just about the most ineffective way to tackle greenhouse emissions and global warming. It will do nothing to prevent the planet sliding into chaos as a result of accelerating global warming and climate change.

We will be widely distributing the brochure setting out why an increase in uranium mining and nuclear reactor numbers is not only bad for the environment but unaffordable and ineffective in combating global warming.
