New GM cotton plans threaten Northern Australia's rivers. Conservation groups have expressed grave concerns over moves by multinational chemical giants Monsanto and Bayer to introduce large scale genetically manipulated (GM) cotton crops in river catchments across northern Australia.

Concern over possible new Daly water licenses: 30 billion litres/year up for approval! Applications to extract over 30,000 megalitres of ground and surface water per year (or 30 billion litres/year) from the Daly River system are believed to be undergoing assessment by the NT Government, ECNT said today.

Overall environment spending has increased by just 1.5% to $95.5 million. This new total represents a mere 3.8% of the total budget – slightly down on the previous year. “Our whole economy and ‘lifestyle’ are based on our natural environment and the services it provides." |

U.S. bombing of NT: President Bush sent letter of protest. ECNT is emailing a letter of protest to President Bush, via the US embassy in Canberra, over the announcement on Friday afternoon that US bombers will be flying over Australia and dropping live bombs on an area of savanna woodland near the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory.
