The environment was a big winner
from the June 18 Northern
Territory election, won in a landslide
by Clare Martin and the ALP.
|
Doing a better job
of looking after the ecosystems, landscapes and other environmental
features that make the Territory special was a prominent issue
in the election, with both Labor and the Greens running strongly
on a range of environment issues.
|
The re-elected Martin government
ran a positive, pro-environment campaign focusing on key issues
including protecting the Daly River, no uranium mining, creating an EPA and conserving Darwin Harbour.
|
Labor's success,
backed up by a strong vote for the Greens in most of the seats
where they ran, means the re-elected Martin government has a clear
mandate and obligation to implement its promises and really start
looking after the Territory's unique and threatened environments.
|
There is much that
needs to be done that can only be achieved with visionary leadership
and adequate funding.
|
The Environment
Centre looks forward to working with the government to address
the environment problems and needs of the NT and help ensure more
focus on ecologically sustainable development.
|
We encourage members and supporters
to contact the newly re-elected government to congratulate them
on their environment policies and encourage them to implement them
fully.

The
Environment Centre NT (ECNT), established in 1983, is the NT's
peak non-government environment organisation. ECNT is not affiliated
with, and does not endorse, any political party and seeks
to work with all sectors of the community to improve environmental
protection across the NT.
|
ECNT's
goals are to increase the understanding and valuing of our
unique marine and terrestrial ecosystems; improve the protection
and management of those ecosystems; and ensure NT communities
and our economy are as ecologically sustainable as possible. ECNT
works at a local, national and international level to raise awareness
about the NT environment and the threats to it.
