Message to: Ms Lyn Allen, Executive Director, Office of Environment and Heritage cc. Hon. Marion Scrymgour, Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage cc. Hon. Kon Vatskalis, Minister for Fisheries, cc Adele Pedder, Environment Centre NT
Dear Ms Allen, Re: Comment on sea cage fish farm proposals. The Northern Territory (NT) is the newest target for sea cage fish farm proposals. Three sites in the Darwin region have been chosen by the company Marine Harvest: Darwin Harbour, Bynoe Harbour and Snake Bay on the Tiwi Islands. Darwin Harbour is rich in marine wildlife and is the most used spot in the NT for recreational purposes . Bynoe Harbour is in a pristine state with islands, corals and seagrass beds, and is soon to be a marine park. The Tiwi Islands are overflowing with nationally and internationaly recognised natural values. These areas having many unique natural, social, cultural and tourism features are far too valuable to be exposed to the impacts and risks of large scale sea cage fish farm development. Intensive fish farming in the marine environment brings pollution; risks to rare and threatened species; risk of pests and diseases spreading to wild barramundi populations; loss of public amenity and access, and many other problems. Similar proposals for sea cage fish farms in coastal regions from Western Australia to Queensland have been rejected due to widespread community opposition and environmental problems. For the very same reasons, these proposals should meet the same fate. No sea cages for our healthy Harbours. Protect our healthy Harbour's from sea cage farms
