The invasion
and spread of environmental weeds is one of the biggest threats
to biodiversity across northern Australia. Most of our invasive
weeds are not native plants but exotic species. They have been
introduced from other countries either intentionally or by accident.

The picture above shows the spread of the noxious weed Hymenachme.
In October 2000 the Northern Territory Government refused to prevent
the sale of Hymenachme as a pasture grass, thereby preventing national
action to ban trade of noxious weeds.
