Dear Members of Parliament, I write to express my deep disappointment in the Northern Territory Government. I had hoped that the Martin Labor Government would be more principled and vigilant in protecting the Territory's environment. The recent decision to divert and mine the McArthur was appalling and demonstrates a 'develop at any cost' approach, including expensive subsidies, that neither protects the environment, the public interest, nor respects the wishes of Traditional Owners. When will the Government release the social and environmental sections of the McArthur River Mine Management Plan? When will it change the act so that such plans are automatically public documents? At a time when our rivers are under increasing pressure, the decision to divert the McArthur River sets a very bad precedent and is contrary to the Martin Labor Government's promise to enact 'Living Rivers' legislation to conserve our unique and relatively intact tropical rivers. When will the 'Living Rivers' legislation be enacted? I believe the people of the Northern Territory want their tropical rivers protected and are looking to you as a member of the Government to ensure it fulfills its environmental promises and obligations. What will you be doing as a Northern Territory MLA to protect our rivers and to ensure that strong and effective 'Living Rivers' legislation is enacted as soon as possible? I strongly urge you to protect our tropical rivers and I look forward to your response.
